Alimentación de Merluccius hubbsi e impacto del canibalismo en la región comprendida entre 34°50'-47°s del Atlántico Sudoccidental. OceanDocs

Feeding of Argentine hake during winter 1994, between 50 and 370 m of depth, in the studied area (34°50'-47°S), is based on the consumption of zooplanktonic crustaceans, fishes and cephalopods. Maximum feeding incidence is found at 36°-40°S (51. ), in sea layer of 80-130 m deep (62. ) and between 8:00-10:00 hours (36,6. ). Cluster analysis shows five spatial groups, with similar length distributions and characteristic principal prey items combination. The males of all sizes show a trend to feed on euphausids and hiperiids amphipods. The females eat more quantities of hake, short fin squid and other fishes. The spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias is an euribatic, euritermic and cosmopolitan specie. In the Argentine Sea it consumes diversity of preys, characteristic of a generalist and oportunist feeder, butits principal food items are ctenophores, fishes and cephalopods.Diet overlap between sexes was found between 34°-37°S and 101-150 m,where males principally feed on fishes, squid and polichaetes,sharing only ctenophores and hake consumption with the females. Near 62 cm TL there is a shift in the diet, due to an increment of argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and squid Illex argentinus predation and a diminution in ctenophores Pleurobrachia pileus eating. Data considered in this paper were obtained during a research cruise carried out on board of RV Dr. E.L. Holmberg from INIDEP (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y Desarrollo Pesquero) during March-April 2000 in the area between 48°S and 55°S (S Patagonian) region, SW Atlantic. From 61 bottom trawls a total of 355 specimen belonging to 11 skate species were collected. This represents, in number, 1.8 of the total species biomass. All skate species were identified and some biological characteristics for each species analyzed. Abundance was estimated in tons and the distribution area of each species was determined. Ecología trófica de peces demersales en el Golfo San Jorge OceanDocs

This work is a first approach in the study of the trophic ecology from a multispecific fishery in San Jorge Gulf (45°-47°S), Argentina. Stomach contents from 28 demersal fish species were analyzed. Taxonomic and trophic spectrum were obtained. Using weight percentage of each prey, trophic spectrum variations for size classes were analized for each of the 12 considered "dominant" species. Overlaping in the diet among these predators was estimate using cluster analysis. There was an interespecific diet overlap between juveniles belonging to demersal-benthic fish species, because all of them prey upon Stomatopoda and Munida. In August 1996 acoustic methods were employed to estimate mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance in the Buenos Aires, Argentina shelf area of "El Rincón" (4,287 mn2), located between 39°- 40° 30' S. Results showed a biomass estimate of 77,260 t. ASIMRAD EK-500 equipment operated with a 38 KHz split-beam transducer was used. Midwater fishing trawls were employed to identify echotraces and to collect mackerel samples.Trawls 4 and 5 were the most successful. Samples included only adult fish (310-470 mm Lt and ages ranging 2-11). Length and weight growth parameters and mortality rates were estimated. An assessment survey on the austral fish was carried out during the summer 1997 on both the shelf and slope off southern Argentina. The cruise covered 101,508 nm2 between 45° and 54° 30'S and depths between 50 and 400 m. The survey did not include the area controlled by the United Kingdom. Considering the total area as an undivided stratum, a random sampling was used to estimate demersal fish biomass and a delta distribution-based model to evaluate mean densities. Out of the forty five species caught 28 were bony fish and 17 elasmobranch. Four cephalopod mollusc species were also identified.
